Robert is a Qualified MBSR Teacher with the University of California San Diego Medical School USA. He is former Buddhist monk who lived, worked and trained for five years at the Nan Hua Zen Buddhist monastery before joining the NHS. It is during this time that he was fortunate enough to meet HH the 14th Dalai Lama. He is an accredited psychological counsellor and has completed a two year project in Mindfulness Based Interventions in an NHS psychiatric hospital with a clinical population. He is also the author Managing Depression with Mindfulness for Dummies. Robert studied the neuroscience and physiology of mindfulness with Neuragy UK and is a registered member of the UK Network for Mindfulness-Based Teacher Training Organisations. What is mindfulness?

Mindfulness is based on an ancient meditation practice, which encourages being fully present in our lives with greater peace and ease. Mindfulness is now an evidence based cognitive training technique which is used to help people live more in the present moment away from past negative mental habits such as constant worrying and negative rumination.The NHS and the UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) now endorses Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) as an effective way of preventing relapse in depression. Mindfulness is also being used to help people recover from anxiety, stress, depression as well as physical pain.

What is Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)?

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a practice that is useful for stress reduction and a greater sense of well-being. The Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction programme teaches mindfulness and basic slow body movement exercises such as yoga to cultivate awareness and reduce stress. MBSR is a 8-Week group-based programme for populations with a wide range of physical and mental health difficulties. It has been extensively studied since the late 1970’s. By now over 28,000 patients had completed the 8-Week MBSR programme. The Dorset Mindfulness Centre offer five MBSR courses courses a year.

What is Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)?

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy is a combination of mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. MBCT is intended to teach people practical skills that can help with anxiety and depression and ongoing life challenges. It is a therapeutic skill of working with one’s thoughts and feelings developing more acceptance of ourselves. Through the use of MBCT we learn to catch our self in the moment going along old habitual thought patterns that we know do not serve us well and consciously choose to do something different. Mindfulness focuses on the observation of thoughts and feelings and the recognition that thoughts are not facts; they simply are a result of being in the present moment.
